Choose the best cover option for you

Whether you’re a learner or new driver, it’s important to make sure you’re buying an insurance product that meets your needs.

Hybrid Learner Policy or New Driver Policy

If you’re still learning to drive, we strongly recommend our unique Hybrid Learner Policy. This annual policy covers you while you hold a provisional licence and after you pass, with no price increases once you get your full licence. What you pay on day one covers your entire year, helps you begin building your no-claims bonus straight away, and saves you money in the long run as you won’t need two separate policies.

If you’ve already passed your test, our New Driver Policy is the one for you. There are no curfews, fines or unnecessary restrictions; you can drive when you want and where you want. When it comes to speed, we are only concerned about persistent or excessive speeding. Avoid that and you will be absolutely fine.

Telematics vs No Device

You may also have the option to choose a policy with or without a telematics device. While it can be tempting to pick a policy without one, new drivers usually save a significant amount by opting for telematics. You can read more about how our devices work in point 5.

Low-Mileage Option

Another way to save is by selecting a lower mileage policy. Being more conservative with how much you drive can reduce your premium, making it a great option if you want to cut costs while still enjoying the freedom to get behind the wheel when it suits you.

Your choice of car

The car you choose to insure will have a big impact on the price of your insurance, and there are several reasons why. One of the main factors is the car’s value. A newer, high-end model will always cost more to repair or replace than an older, more modest one.

Engine size also plays a key role. Aim for something with 1.4 litres or less under the bonnet. The bigger and more powerful the engine, the greater the likelihood of a costly claim.

It is also best to avoid cars with modifications. These can increase your premium and, in some cases, result in a declined quote.

Another factor that often gets overlooked is desirability. If the car is the kind that turns heads, the shiny one from the TV advert, it may be just as appealing to potential thieves. In short, choosing a less eye-catching car could save you money and hassle.

3

Mileage

It’s important to think carefully about your mileage when providing an estimate to your insurer. You can increase it during the year if you need to, but it’s best to get as close to an accurate figure as possible so you’re not paying for miles you won’t actually use.

On the other hand, choosing a mileage estimate that’s much lower than you know you’ll drive can end up costing you as well, as you may be charged a fee each time you need to add more miles.

4

Think carefully about additional drivers

It’s very common for new drivers to include a named driver on their first insurance policy, typically a parent, and doing so will usually help bring the cost of the premium down. Adding a parent or guardian to your policy could cut costs by £500 plus!

5

Opt for a smart telematics device

If you opt for one of our policies with a smart telematics device, you could save money on your insurance. Our telematics devices allow you to drive when you want and where you want. No curfews. No fines for acceleration. No fines for braking or cornering. When it comes to speed we’re only interested in persistent or excessive speeding (don’t be a speed freak and you’ll be fine!).

Keep in mind that the main purpose of car insurance is to protect you if something goes wrong. It’s not worth cutting corners or leaving out key details to save a little now, as it could lead to a much bigger cost later.
